About The Position

Painter positions perform journey-level painting work throughout the City's facilities; strip and refinish metal, wood and concrete surfaces by sanding, scraping and grinding; apply coats of latex and epoxy paint, lacquer, enamel and protectants by brush, roller and spray to coat buildings and structures, pipes, pumps, tanks, furniture, light stands and flagpoles; and perform other duties as assigned. Painter employees in the Public Utilities Department, Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Division provide corrosion control to all of the treatment plants and pump stations within the division; provide protective coatings for pumps, valves, motors, blowers, chemical feed systems, conveyors, screening systems and other industrial equipment; sandblast, use needle guns, chemical applications and scrapers to prepare surfaces; use specialized multi-part coatings and specialized equipment to apply these products; address safety issues such as color coding, walkways surface repair and non-skid applications; conventional painting and some roofing applications; and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a state-accredited three-year Painter Apprenticeship Program OR Three years of full-time experience in all phases of work as a journey-level Painter.
  • Qualifying experience must include painting metal surfaces, buildings and structures.
  • Qualifying experience must include preparing surfaces for painting.
  • Qualifying experience must include mixing paint chemicals, such as colors, stains and thinners.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
  • Must be Confined Space certified and pass a Confined Space physical within six months from date of hire (for positions in the Public Utilities Department, Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Division).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with specialized multipart epoxies and use with a HVLP airless conventional spray system.
  • Experience with concrete repair products and cement repair.
  • Experience with elastomeric roofing products and their application.
  • Experience with drywall taping and texturing.
  • Experience with wallpaper and other wall coverings.
  • Experience painting industrial equipment (e.g., pumps, valves, motors, blowers, chemical feed systems, conveyors, screening systems and other industrial equipment).
