The Painter applies coatings to buildings, counters, cabinets, walls, and other surfaces using standard methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying. The role requires knowledge of surface preparation, coating methods, special-effect finishes, and techniques including rubbing down fine-textured finishes, marbling, mottling, and graining. The Painter prepares coating materials by blending, tinting, toning, and adding materials; builds up and levels surfaces; smooths surfaces with abrasives; treats surfaces with precoating agents; and ensures finishes meet required match, texture, and thickness specifications. The work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present, and the employee is occasionally exposed to bad weather requiring heavy, uncomfortable protective clothing. The work also involves frequent exposure to cuts and bruises and the possibility of broken bones from falling ladders and scaffolds. Physical tasks include standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, working in tiring positions, and handling materials and equipment weighing up to 10 pounds frequently and 40 pounds or more occasionally.
