About The Position

The Painter is responsible for surface preparation and application of industrial coatings to fabricated vessels and packaged systems prior to shipment. This role utilizes spray booths, spray rigs, and related equipment to apply protective and finish coating systems in accordance with engineering drawings, RVS standards, and customer requirements. Painters ensure proper coating selection, mixing, application, film thickness, cure, and finish quality while complying with safety, environmental, and disposal regulations. This position will become a full-time second shift position. Initial training will take place during the first shift (7:00 am – 3:30 pm CST, Monday – Friday, 8-hour days). Once training is completed, the position would move to our second shift (8:30 pm – 7:00 AM CST, Monday – Thursday, 10-hour days)

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience in industrial painting or coatings application required
  • Familiarity with spray equipment, coating systems, and surface preparation methods
  • Ability to read work instructions, job travelers, and basic drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment (standing, lifting, bending)
  • Understanding of shop safety practices and PPE requirements

Responsibilities

  • Prepare surfaces for coating by cleaning, masking, sanding, and inspecting prior to application.
  • Read and interpret drawings, travelers, and coating specifications to determine required coating systems and colors.
  • Mix single‑ and multi‑component coating systems per manufacturer datasheets and RVS procedures.
  • Set up, operate, and clean spray booths, spray rigs, pumps, hoses, and application equipment.
  • Apply coatings to achieve required coverage, appearance, and film thickness.
  • Measure and document coating thickness (DFT/mils) as required.
  • Identify and correct common coating defects (runs, sags, holidays, dry spray).
  • Perform daily cleaning and preventative maintenance of painting equipment.
  • Maintain paint booths, paint kitchens, and work areas in clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Manage, store, and dispose of paints, solvents, filters, and waste materials per environmental procedures.
  • Coordinate coating inspections and acceptance with Quality Control prior to shipment.
  • Support movement and positioning of vessels and packages using forks, cranes, and man‑lifts (as trained).
  • Follow all PPE, respiratory protection, ventilation, and safety requirements.
