About The Position

Under general supervision, performs professional interior and exterior painting, coating and sealing of City facilities; performs related work as assigned. This role works under the general supervision of the Building Maintenance supervisor and does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) years experience in commercial painting and/or building maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of paint and site surface preparation and paint application.
  • Knowledge of common hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and procedures for the disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Skill in surface cleaning, preparation and application of paint, varnish or other coatings or sealants.
  • Skill in safely using, maintaining and repairing specialized equipment to complete assigned projects.
  • Skill in safely working from ladders and scaffolds.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools.
  • Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Skill in verbal and written communications.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Responsibilities

  • Receives work orders or project assignment from supervisor.
  • Assembles and prepares necessary materials to complete assignment.
  • Establishes safe work area and coordinates activities with the general public as necessary.
  • Prepares surfaces to be painted by removing old paint, utilizing scrapers, wire brushes, and cleaning or pressure washing.
  • Applies primer, new paint or other coating according to work orders; removes graffiti as needed.
  • Cleans brushes, rollers, sprayers and other equipment upon completion, and disposes of paint, solvents and cleaners according to City hazardous materials procedures.
  • Performs a variety of building maintenance duties as assigned including demolition and/or construction of permanent or temporary interior walls, plaster patchwork, roof maintenance and repair and installation of floor coverings.
  • Completes and submits routine reports and other paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
