About The Position

This is a part-time, as-needed position for a Paint Shop role. If hired, your name will be added to a list by the shop supervisor and you will be contacted when work is available. The role involves executing scenic finishes, preparing and painting scenery and theater spaces, and maintaining the shop and its tools. A lead role may involve taking on more responsibility for specific projects, teaching techniques, and managing other painters.

Requirements

Previous experience as a scenic artist or equivalent in a fabrication setting.
Portfolio of work that demonstrates experience, various techniques, and a high quality of work.
Working knowledge of surface prep, scenic methods, and surface finishes.
Must be able to stand, kneel, climb, and lift a reasonable amount within the standard expectations of the position.

Nice To Haves

Scenic Art training a plus
Degree in Design or Production a plus
Professional Fabrication shop experience a plus
Professional Scenic Art Experience a plus

Responsibilities

Executing scenic finishes under the direction of the Scenic Charge Artist, Assistant, and staff.
Prep and painting of both scenery and the theater spaces themselves, which might include filing, priming, basing, and back painting.
Maintenance and cleanup of the shop and its tools as necessary to maintain an orderly and safe workspace.
A lead takes on more responsibility for a specific project and teaching techniques for the project and managing the performance of other painters on that project.
Ability to keep scheduled commitments.
Able to adapt quickly to changing priorities and timelines.
Expected to work within a theatrical team and maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
Ability to adhere to technique and schedule.
Must follow all health and safety guidelines deemed necessary by New York State, New York City, and The Juilliard School.
Must be able to stand, kneel, climb, and lift a reasonable amount within the standard expectations of the position.
