About The Position

The New Jersey Judiciary is offering paid internship opportunities for Winter 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027. Interns will perform a variety of clerical, administrative, supportive tasks, and customer service duties in connection with court proceedings. This role provides a broad insight and knowledge of the court system. Internships may be available in the Civil, Criminal, Criminal Pre-Trial Services, Family, Ombudsman, and Operations, Probation, and IT divisions. The hourly rate for this position is $20.00, with a maximum of 35 hours per week, not to exceed 944 hours in a fiscal year. Interns are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Flexible schedules are available between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is essential.

Requirements

  • For Pre-Trial Services (PTS) interns: Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree or certificate in the Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • For all other interns: Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree.
  • Unofficial College or University transcript must be included in the application.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US.
  • Selected candidates must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting.
  • New hires must establish and maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey within one year of hiring, unless an exemption is granted.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of clerical, administrative, supportive tasks, and customer service duties in connection with court proceedings.
  • Assist with tasks including data entry and lookups, filing, and making photocopies.
  • Prepare filings for judge and staff review, including document retrieval and providing documents to chambers.
  • Assist with answering phones, returning phone calls, and receiving and distributing voicemails.
  • Research caseloads.
  • Calendar management.
  • Moderate virtual hearings.
  • Assist with client contact for newly assigned cases and reminders.
  • Perform special projects.
  • Conduct research and analysis.
  • Perform computer-related work.
  • Collect and enter data.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Draft correspondences and memos.
  • Attend community planning meetings.
  • Assist staff as directed.
  • Follow up with treatment providers and defendants.
