About The Position

The PACS Administrator is responsible for the daily management, maintenance, support, and optimization of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), Radiology Information System (RIS), and related imaging applications. This role ensures efficient workflow, system functionality, image integrity, and connectivity between imaging modalities, radiologists, providers, and external systems. The PACS Administrator serves as the primary liaison between Radiology, Information Technology, vendors, and clinical staff to support imaging operations and maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school education or equivalent.
  • Experience with GE PACS, MedQ, PowerScribe, Athena, or similar systems.
  • Experience supporting teleradiology workflows and remote reading environments.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of PACS administration or radiology operations experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of PACS, RIS, DICOM, HL7, and imaging workflows.
  • Experience with radiology imaging systems and modalities.
  • Knowledge of healthcare IT infrastructure, networking, and troubleshooting.
  • Skilled in use of computer/EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of Word processing software, spreadsheet software, Internet, and database software.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in radiologic technology, Healthcare Informatics, Information Systems, or related field preferred.
  • Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain PACS, RIS, and associated imaging systems.
  • Monitor system performance, connectivity, and image workflow.
  • Troubleshoot PACS/RIS issues including image routing, worklists, interfaces, and user access.
  • Coordinate system upgrades, patches, and maintenance with vendors and IT.
  • Maintain imaging archives and ensure data integrity and accessibility.
  • Support DICOM, HL7, and interface connectivity between modalities and systems.
  • Configure user accounts, permissions, and security access.
  • Provide daily operational support to radiologists, technologists, and clinical staff.
  • Monitor image transmission to reading groups, teleradiology services, and outside facilities.
  • Assist with workflow optimization and process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain downtime procedures and disaster recovery plans.
  • Support imaging workflow for all radiology modalities including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography, X-ray, Nuclear Medicine, and Interventional Radiology.
  • Train staff on PACS/RIS workflows and system functionality.
  • Develop user guides, workflow documentation, and training materials.
  • Provide ongoing support and education to end users.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality standards.
  • Assist with ACR, MQSA, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Monitor system quality control and data accuracy.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Serve as liaison between Radiology, IT, and vendors.
  • Track and escalate system issues to vendors as needed.
  • Coordinate implementation of new imaging equipment and software integrations.
