About The Position

This is a hands-on Protection and Control Technician role supporting the commissioning of electrical substations and related power systems. You will work alongside project leads and technical teams to test, troubleshoot, document, and safely commission protection and control systems. The role requires strong electrical fundamentals, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely around energized electrical equipment. Travel is a regular part of the position, including overnight and multi-day projects.

Requirements

  • Associate technical degree or equivalent military technical training
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in P&C, substation commissioning, project management, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory and protective relaying principles
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams and schematics
  • Experience using relay test sets and automated relay testing software
  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP, DNP, Modbus, Ethernet, serial communications, fiber optics, wireless systems, and related communication technologies
  • Familiarity with construction and electrical apparatus testing standards and procedures
  • Basic understanding of NERC standards and CIP policies and procedures
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Willingness to obtain company-paid TWIC, OSHA 10-Hour, NFPA 70E, and CPR training

Nice To Haves

  • Military experience such as Army Prime Power or Naval Nuclear Power is highly relevant
  • Experience with project management software is a plus
  • Familiarity with electrical industry software from manufacturers such as SEL, GE, Cooper, NovaTech, ABB, and Siemens
  • Ability to achieve NETA Level III or IV certification within 12 months of employment
  • Current NETA Level III or IV certification is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day-to-day commissioning activities on assigned projects
  • Perform assigned testing and commissioning activities under the direction of the Project Lead
  • Read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams and schematics
  • Use relay test sets and automated relay testing software
  • Support testing and troubleshooting of protective relays, control systems, and related equipment
  • Follow applicable commissioning procedures, construction standards, and testing requirements
  • Apply basic electrical theory and protective relaying principles
  • Work with network communications including TCP/IP, DNP, and Modbus
  • Support communication systems using Ethernet, serial communications, fiber optics, telephone, wireless systems, and powerline carrier
  • Work with common electrical industry software from manufacturers such as SEL, GE, Cooper, NovaTech, ABB, and Siemens
  • Follow applicable NERC standards and CIP policies, procedures, and documentation requirements
  • Attend project safety, planning, and coordination meetings
  • Communicate potential schedule delays, technical concerns, or cost overruns to the Project Lead
  • Complete required project documentation and weekly status reporting
  • Submit time and expense reports accurately and on time
  • Communicate professionally with customers, project leaders, and other team members
  • Identify potential customer needs and new business opportunities when appropriate
  • Identify project safety hazards and contribute to task hazard mitigation planning
  • Identify human performance risks and contribute to task risk mitigation planning
  • Maintain tools and test equipment in clean, organized, and serviceable condition
  • Ensure test equipment remains current with required inspections and calibrations
  • Maintain company vehicles in clean and organized condition
  • Follow company safety policies and procedures at all times
