About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Trip Coordinator will plan, direct, and supervise YMCA Camp Shady Brook’s overnight trip program. The Trip Coordinator will develop a trip curriculum that incorporates outdoor living skills, hiking, backpacking, environmental education, and Leave No Trace principles. Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous experience guiding backcountry trips.
  • Previous experience working in a youth camp setting.
  • Able to direct and supervise campers
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification
  • Complete Hazardous Communications, Harassment Prevention, Blood-borne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention training and attend Living Our Cause/Engaging our members at time of hire
  • Maintain CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer every year
  • Maintain First Aid and Administering Emergency Oxygen every 2 years
  • Blood-borne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year
  • Ability to visually observe children and intervene when the safety of a participant could be compromised.
  • Ability to physically move with participants to hike, walk, stand, bend and lift comfortably over the course of a day.
  • Mentally and visually alert to recognize potential hazards and accidents.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, Oxygen and First Aid effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an exciting, educational, and safe overnight trip program incorporating the YMCA’s core values.
  • Immediately report any safety, health or equipment maintenance problems to the Associate Executive Director upon discovery.
  • Maintain inventory of necessary equipment/supplies, and inform Associate Executive Director of needed supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinate with Unit Leads and Teen Leadership Coordinators to develop a curriculum/schedule for camp outs specific to each unit and/or age group that are engaging and age appropriate.
  • Educate and enforce Leave No Trace principles during backcountry use.
  • Act as a leader in risk management by making sound decisions, uphold camp procedures, and implement industry best practices on backcountry trips.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties.
  • Will work as a cabin counselor as requested.
  • Play an active role in all camp activities.
  • Will work stayover weekends as assigned.
  • Evaluate current season and make suggestions for future seasons.
  • To perform all other duties as needed or assigned.
