About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Adventure Camp Coordinator will be responsible for planning, implementing and supervising the YMCA’s Camp Shady Brook’s Adventure Camp and high adventure programming. Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Safety-conscious and energetic person who is able to relate well with campers, staff, and parents.
  • Previous experience or extensive knowledge of instructing and leading camping, backpacking, rock climbing, hiking, fishing, orienteering, and other outdoor skills
  • Rock climbing certification from a nationally recognized organization or significant relevant climbing experience, knowledge, and ability required.
  • Prior experience with youth or family programming.
  • Must possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to campers, staff, and program participants.
  • Must have a sincere and genuine interest in working with youth, and should relate well to all age levels and backgrounds of people.
  • Ability to review, implement, and adapt one week curriculum.
  • Ability to plan, initiate and lead small and large group activities
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification
  • Complete Hazardous Communications, Harassment Prevention, Blood-borne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention training and attend Living Our Cause/Engaging our members at time of hire
  • Maintain CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer every year
  • Maintain First Aid and Administering Emergency Oxygen every 2 years
  • Blood-borne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year
  • Ability to visually observe children and intervene when the safety of a participant could be compromised.
  • Ability to physically move with participants to hike, walk, stand, bend and lift comfortably over the course of a day.
  • Mentally and visually alert to recognize potential hazards and accidents.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, Oxygen and First Aid effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and adapt curriculum for an exciting and safe Adventure Camp program incorporating the YMCA’s values.
  • Develop a plan/curriculum for each activity in the event of inclement weather/other obstacles preventing originally scheduled program implementation.
  • Develop a one week curriculum that incorporates outdoor living skills, hiking, backpacking, fishing, orienteering, rock climbing, and more.
  • Regularly inspect and immediately report any safety, health, or equipment maintenance concerns to the Associate Executive Director.
  • Communicate any adaptations to the curriculum/pre-determined schedule to the Associate Executive Director prior to implementing any changes.
  • Maintain inventory of necessary equipment/supplies, and inform Associate Executive Director of needed supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties.
  • Facilitate an engaging group cabin living experience as assigned.
  • Play an active role in all camp activities.
  • Will work on stay over weekends as assigned.
  • Evaluate the current season and make suggestions for the future season.
  • To perform all other duties as needed or assigned.
