About The Position

This position is for job seekers with no trades experience who are willing to complete a three-week unpaid training program in the Outside Machinist trade. Newport News Shipbuilding, in partnership with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities, offers Marine Trades Training course-to-hire programs for people interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. The Machinist Trainee program is offered at Camp Community College in Suffolk, Virginia. Training is 120 hours over three weeks, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with courses offered monthly and 8–10 students per class. Outside machinists install, maintain, test, and repair major mechanical components and systems aboard naval vessels during new construction, overhaul, and repair. The work uses a range of hand tools and machinery, including wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, micrometers, drill presses, optical instruments, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes. Work may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, or elevated platforms, and in small, confined spaces such as tanks, compartments, or ship voids. The role requires attention to safety and precision, adaptability, physical agility, and comfort working in challenging conditions. Candidates must be willing to work any shift and overtime as needed. Full-time employment is associated with the course-to-hire program; the three-week training itself is unpaid.
