This role is for job seekers with no trades experience who are willing to complete a three-week, unpaid Pipefitter training program. Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, Virginia community colleges, and maritime training facilities to offer Marine Trades Training course-to-hire programs. The Pipefitter Trainee program is held at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, Virginia, and consists of 120 hours over three weeks, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Courses are offered once a month to classes of 5–10 students. Successful candidates learn the Pipefitter trade and work full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Pipefitters install complex piping systems on ships, including more than 23 miles of pipe on submarines and more than 230 miles on aircraft carriers. Trainees learn to read blueprints and fabricate, install, inspect, and test ship piping systems. Work includes assembling, welding, and securing pipe, as well as troubleshooting and repairing existing systems. Work may take place outdoors in all weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, or elevated platforms, and in small, confined ship spaces such as tanks, compartments, or voids. The work requires attention to safety and precision, adaptability, and physical agility.
