About The Position

This role involves working within a team of Outside Machinists to achieve production time, standards, and quality in accordance with company policies, while fostering a positive and motivated team environment. The position requires installing, disassembling, fault-finding, repairing, and re-assembling shipboard equipment. Machinists will work with precision, using calibrated equipment for marking and measuring to close tolerances, and must adhere to all OSHA requirements for rigging equipment safely. Key aspects include inspecting work, identifying potential problems, initiating corrective actions, promoting quality procedures, ensuring adherence to correct work procedures, and improving team communication and flexibility. The role also involves developing team members' skills, building pride in workmanship and quality through on-the-job training, contributing to innovation and productivity improvements, assisting in waste elimination, and supporting supervisors in maintaining control of department equipment and its maintenance. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the team's objective of delivering vessels on time, following Austal guidelines and procedures, and ensuring a clean and safe work area. This position requires the ability to travel to off-site work locations and adhere to the Austal Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy.

Requirements

Comparable trade experience (defined as 5 or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, 2 years of experience in shipbuilding, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship or 1-year minimum work experience as a B-class outside machinist at Austal).
Demonstrated knowledge of shaft alignment techniques including laser alignment systems and dial indicator alignment processes.
Demonstrated working knowledge of machining procedures.
Strong mechanical aptitude required.
Knowledge of ship terminology.
Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings.
Demonstrated ability to safely operate all fixed and non-fixed machinery.
Ability set up machinery to meet flatness tolerance requirements.
Demonstrated ability to interpret job specifications.
Ability to perform work on marine vessels.
Must be able to follow directions and work with limited supervision.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Proven problem solving abilities.
Must be able to travel to off-site work locations.
Must follow Austal Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy (SUP270).
Must have full set of personal tools.
18 years of age or older at time of application.
Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
Willing to submit to a drug screen.
Willing to submit to a background check.

Responsibilities

Install equipment on board vessels in a safe and productive manner.
Disassemble, fault find, repair and re-assemble shipboard equipment as directed by the supervisor.
Mark and measure to close tolerances using Austal calibrated equipment.
Safely rig equipment following all OSHA requirements.
Inspection of work, identification of potential problems, initiation of corrective actions.
Increase awareness of Quality procedures within department.
Ensure adherence to correct work procedures.
Continuously improve communications and flexibility within the team.

Ensure work area is left clean, all equipment and tools are stowed away safely and protected against damage.
Performs and executes work in compliance with NAVSEA STD Items.
