About The Position

Outside machinists are responsible for installing, grooming, testing, and repairing a ship's major mechanical components and systems. This work can occur on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair. Ship components involved can include steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults and weapons systems, periscopes, and laundry, food service, or refrigeration equipment. Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery, from basic wrenches and screwdrivers to complex equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Able to climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
  • Able to work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
  • Able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
  • Able to lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more.
  • Able to work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
  • Able to work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
  • Able to work in areas with radiation.
  • Able to take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Able to work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Able to take and pass a Physical Agility Test.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mechanical concepts (e.g., Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair) or relevant tools or techniques.
  • Experience with HVAC systems or parts.
  • Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair is a plus.
  • Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.

Responsibilities

  • Install, groom, test, and repair a ship's major mechanical components and systems.
  • Work on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair.
  • Work with ship components including steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults and weapons systems, periscopes, and laundry, food service, or refrigeration equipment.
  • Operate a wide variety of tools and machinery, including wrenches, screwdrivers, saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes.
