Outside machinists are responsible for installing, grooming, testing, and repairing a ship's major mechanical components and systems. This work can occur on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair. Ship components involved can include steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults and weapons systems, periscopes, and laundry, food service, or refrigeration equipment. Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery, from basic wrenches and screwdrivers to complex equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes.
