About The Position

The Outside Buyer is an outside sales role responsible for generating purchases of scrap metals (both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous) within a defined geographic area. This role involves visiting facilities of current and potential suppliers, developing relationships, and negotiating prices and contracts to grow and retain the supplier base. The Outside Buyer must be knowledgeable about different scrap metal grades, market conditions, pricing strategies, and transportation/processing costs to maximize profit. This position also requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to meet volume and margin requirements.

Requirements

  • External sales/account management experience.
  • Knowledgeable of all different types of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous scrap grades.
  • Knowledgeable about transportation, grading, handling, and processing costs for all commodities.
  • Thorough understanding of the current pricing strategy.
  • Understanding of current market conditions.
  • Bachelors degree preferred, but not required.
  • One to four years sales or non-procurement buying experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Windows XP, which includes Outlook.
  • Tact and ability to communicate with people at all levels, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner.
  • Excellent mathematical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Basic typing and data entry skills.
  • Ability to have practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day.
  • Ability to bend at waist.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle.
  • Ability to use hands to write or keyboard.
  • Ability to assemble papers, staple, photocopy, use ten-key.
  • Ability to be mobile within an average office environment.
  • Ability to communicate by phone and in person in a professional manner.
  • Visual acuity to read detailed documents, inspect material and use a computer.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older (for U.S. applicants).

Responsibilities

  • Generate purchases of scrap metals (Ferrous and Non-Ferrous) within a defined geographic area.
  • Visit facilities of current and potential suppliers (scrap metal dealers, demolition contractors, industrial manufacturers, auto wreckers, etc.).
  • Develop and build customer/supplier relationships.
  • Negotiate prices and long-term contracts.
  • Assess the value, quality, and required processing of all grades of metals.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to maximize volume and margin requirements.
  • Understand current market conditions, customer and competitor pricing.
  • Ensure safe work practices and equipment usage in accordance with company safety policies, OSHA, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Communicate daily with current and potential suppliers, both in person and over the phone.
  • Foster current relationships and develop/expand the supplier base.
  • Communicate daily with other facilities per purchase contracts or known commitments.
  • Educate and train customers on scrap quality and acceptance policy.
  • Prepare and submit bids in response to request for quotes.
  • Calculate resources needed to support bid offering requirements.
  • Confirm bids or pricing requests for significant quantities of material with management.
  • Review current market conditions and company inventory position with the Commercial Operations team before making significant or long-term purchases.
  • Encourage suppliers to move product to facilities quickly.
  • Advance payments to suppliers in accordance with policy.
  • Review transactions and purchase activities daily.
  • Ensure proper pricing is available for Commercial Operations and Scale Receiving teams.
  • Coordinate with the facility’s Office Manager to ensure pricing is continuously updated.
  • Entertain and maintain relationships with key top-tier customers.
  • Develop a written plan of action with the Regional Account Manager.
  • Spend approximately 25% of the work week in search of new business.
  • Portray a positive image for Schnitzer Metals Recycling Business (MRB).
  • Coordinate with office staff for accurate and timely documentation of purchasing transactions.
  • Provide weekly reports on customer visits, material purchased, follow-up actions, and expense reports.
  • Monitor and maintain exempt and/or hourly staff at cost-effective levels.
  • Monitor supervisory practices for self and direct reports.
  • Review performance of direct reports.
  • Interview prospective management and/or production employees.
  • Work with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions.
  • Perform special projects or other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Support the Company’s Internal Control process.
  • Communicate upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
