About The Position

Under the supervision of the Manager, Outreach Services, this role is responsible for covering various Outreach Patient Service Centers (PSCs), traveling to patients' homes, and Assisted and Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities. The position involves day-to-day PSC and Home Draw operations, including customer service, training, patient registration, test ordering, venipunctures, specimen processing, specimen tracking, and supply management, all in accordance with established policies and procedures. Requirements

  • Acquired through high school plus accredited course through a licensed phlebotomy educational program, hospital, or a community college.
  • Phlebotomy certification required.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience with demonstrated venipuncture proficiency and ability to function independently preferred.
  • Demonstrated customer service and communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with all levels, allay fears of patients and to perform other activities which require courtesy and tact.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • Knowledge of blood collection equipment, anticoagulants used, special precautions and interferences and ability to implement principles of aseptic techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, infection control, specimen processing, medical terminology, anatomic terminology, universal precautions, first aid and safety.
  • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants and visual acuity to distinguish chromatic colors.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and current vehicle registration.

  • Uses personal vehicle and adheres to Lifespan’s System-Wide Personal Vehicle Policy. Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and current vehicle registration.
  • Maintains weekly mileage logs for submission and reimbursement.
  • Documents hours worked for payroll purposes.
  • Works independently obtaining blood specimens from homebound patients, LTC, and assisted living facilities.
  • Participates in on-call rotation.
  • Completes efficient routes minimizing patient wait times and delays.
  • Calls patient(s) prior to visit, leaves door knocker for missed appointments, and notifies Home Draw Administration of any changes.
  • Processes specimens into the laboratory for testing during on-call and varied hours when Processing staff are unavailable.
  • Requires on-call coverage at multiple patient service center locations.
  • Works cooperatively with management in implementing new procedures and protocols and assists with problem resolution if needed.
  • Reviews requisitions to determine services to be performed.
  • Reviews and accurately completes LifeChart and non-LifeChart generated lab orders.
  • References pathology handbook/electronic lab guide and obtains additional clarifying information from physician as necessary for test orders.
  • Performs registrations, enters test orders, medical necessity, Media Manager, specimen processing & tracking functions.
  • Maintains Outreach Float Resource Binder.
  • Provides coverage at Outreach patient service centers (PSCs) throughout RI and nearby Massachusetts.
  • Supports day-to-day PSC operations, patient registration, test orders, venipunctures, ensures supplies and necessary equipment are readily available, routinely checks expiration dates.
  • Assists with daily patient service center checklists, ensures tasks are complete and recorded by end of shift.
  • Answers phones and performs routine clerical duties as needed.
  • Don/Doff PPE as required.
  • Delivers and maintains on-site laboratory supply inventory at LTC facilities.
  • Following Order of Draw, obtains blood samples from patients according to venipuncture technique.
  • Obtains samples for specialized tests.
  • Monitors patient for potential reactions including diaphoresis, sleeping, etc.
  • Labels, dates, initials, records, and prepares samples appropriately for transport to laboratory for testing and analysis.
  • Adheres to all system-wide and departmental policies including but not limited to Departmental Call-Out Protocol, Unplanned Absences and Tardiness, Patient Identification and Verification, Patient Look-Up, Venipuncture and Specimen Labeling.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
