About The Position

This is a full-time Outreach Phlebotomist position within ACL Laboratories - Outreach in West Allis. The role involves verifying patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and independently performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from patients of all ages according to established protocols. The phlebotomist will obtain specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times, ensure proper labeling and suitability for testing, and resolve any specimen identification or requisition problems. Responsibilities also include processing specimens, responding to additional requests, logging vehicle use, assisting with inventory, and instructing employees and students in phlebotomy functions. The position requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development over the life span.

Requirements

  • Current driver's license granted by the state of residency with a driving record that meets Aurora fleet safety standards.
  • High School Graduate.
  • No experience required.
  • Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.
  • Keyboarding and typing skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good listening and decision making skills.
  • Ability to use the telephone effectively with a clear speaking voice and a courteous manner.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other hospital and laboratory employees.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies positive patient identification to ensure patient safety.
  • Assesses patient reactions to specimen procurement.
  • Independently performs venipuncture and collects other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
  • Obtains medical assistance when judged necessary.
  • Obtains specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times.
  • Ensures completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol.
  • Ensures that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing.
  • Resolves specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifies requests.
  • Enters, releases, and verifies test requests into the computer system as needed.
  • Processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, while maintaining proper specimen identification.
  • Responds to additional specimen procurement requests via pager and/or phone from dispatch staff.
  • Follows established procedures for logging vehicle use.
  • Keeps Supervisor informed of current driving status.
  • Assists with inventory and maintains supplies and/or equipment.
  • Instructs employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry and specimen processing functions.
  • Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
