About The Position

The SSVF Outreach Community Ambassador is responsible for expanding awareness and access to Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) throughout the eight-county Big Bend region. This position identifies, engages, and screens potentially eligible Veterans and their families for SSVF services through phone, email, text, in-person outreach, and community-based engagement. The Community Ambassador develops and maintains relationships with local agencies, care providers, churches, community centers, schools, businesses, and other community partners to promote SSVF services and connect eligible Veterans and their families with appropriate resources. The position utilizes diversion and problem-solving strategies to help prevent homelessness when possible and makes appropriate referrals to community partners when SSVF is not the most suitable resource. The Community Ambassador must be able to effectively assess and prioritize the needs of individuals and families experiencing crisis, respond with professionalism and compassion, and connect Veterans to timely and appropriate services and resources.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and client needs.
  • Ability to engage individuals experiencing homelessness or crisis with empathy, professionalism, and respect.
  • Ability to effectively de-escalate and respond to individuals experiencing a crisis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the eight-county Big Bend service area.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record sufficient to meet agency insurance requirements.
  • Ability to complete required agency and program training.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or a related field preferred. Experience can replace education requirements on a year to year ratio.
  • Experience working with underserved, low-income, homeless, or diverse populations preferred.
  • Knowledge of housing, leasing, eviction, and homelessness prevention processes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach and provide SSVF information and services to low-income Veterans and their families, including unsheltered individuals and those experiencing housing instability.
  • Build trust and rapport with clients by meeting them where they are and using effective, client-centered engagement strategies.
  • Identify and screen potential clients, assess needs, provide referrals, and connect Veterans and families to appropriate services and resources.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with social service agencies, faith-based and community organizations, law enforcement, landlords, and other community stakeholders throughout the eight-county Big Bend region.
  • Promote SSVF through community outreach, presentations, events, and activities such as Point-in-Time counts and Stand Downs.
  • Advocate and negotiate on behalf of Veteran families with landlords and community partners to support housing stability and prevent homelessness.
  • Maintain accurate client records, complete required documentation, and enter and maintain data in HMIS while supporting data quality.
  • Respond appropriately to clients experiencing crisis and prioritize services based on urgency and individual needs.
  • Travel extensively throughout the eight-county service area and complete required program and agency training.
