About The Position

Inova is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing Outpatient Thoracic Surgery and Interventional Pulmonology team. This role provides comprehensive care for patients with thoracic conditions in a collaborative, multidisciplinary outpatient setting. The APP will partner closely with thoracic surgeons, interventional pulmonologists, nursing staff, and other specialists to deliver exceptional patient-centered care throughout the continuum of treatment. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Board Certified (AANP, ANCC, or NCCPA), BLS certification required.
  • Current Virginia Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license (or eligibility for licensure).
  • Current DEA registration or eligibility to obtain.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer a provider with prior thoracic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, surgical oncology, pulmonology, or related surgical experience, or a minimum of two years of advanced practice clinical experience.
  • Two or more years of Advanced Practice Provider experience in Thoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Pulmonology, or a related specialty.
  • Experience managing patients with thoracic malignancies and post-operative thoracic surgical care.
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary cancer care and outpatient surgical practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient evaluation and management for patients with thoracic/interventional pulmonology conditions, including lung nodules, lung cancer, airway obstruction, mediastinal masses, pleural effusions, esophageal disorders, chest wall disorders, and benign thoracic diseases.
  • Conduct new patient consultations, follow-up visits, and pre-operative and post-operative evaluations.
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories, perform physical examinations, develop treatment plans, and document clinical findings.
  • Order, interpret, and communicate laboratory studies, pulmonary function tests, pathology reports, and diagnostic imaging, including CT, PET, and chest X-rays.
  • Perform and interpret chest ultrasounds.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and remove pleural catheters and chest tubes.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and remove gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes.
  • Collaborate closely with thoracic surgeons and multidisciplinary teams, including pulmonology, oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and primary care providers.
  • Coordinate pre-operative evaluations, surgical clearances, and post-operative care to ensure seamless transitions across the continuum of care.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and ongoing surveillance.
  • Manage postoperative concerns, medication adjustments, and symptom management through clinic visits, telephone encounters, and electronic patient communications.
  • Facilitate referrals and coordinate care with ancillary services, including pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking cessation programs, nutrition, and social work.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support evidence-based clinical practice.
