About The Position

MercyOne North Iowa is seeking a part-time Outpatient Infusion RN (IV RN) for their Oncology department. This role involves administering outpatient injections and infusions, including chemotherapy, cardiac, and COVID-related treatments, while providing patient and family education. The Cancer Center is designed for comprehensive, coordinated care in one location, staffed by experienced professionals. The position is part-time, 24 hours per week, with day shifts (8:00a-4:30p), no weekends, and no holidays. MercyOne is committed to improving community health and is the largest employer in Cerro Gordo County. The organization is a teaching institution with various residency and fellowship programs and serves as a clinical training site for numerous students.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a program in professional nursing.
  • Current RN license in the state of Iowa.
  • Must complete and successfully pass ACLS certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) courses: Cancer Basics and Chemotherapy Biotherapy: Fundamentals of Administration course(s).
  • Successfully complete Chemotherapy Skills Checklists prior to administering chemotherapy.
  • After 9 months of employment, must successfully complete the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate course, and renew every 2 years.
  • Current ACLS certification, or willing to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Completing the necessary cardiac dysrhythmias and management courses within 3 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Chemotherapy and cardiac drug administration experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in an oncology inpatient or outpatient health care setting.
  • Prefer minimum of 4 years of experience in a health care setting, inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice or clinic experience.
  • OCN certification within 2 years of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Accept responsibility and accountability for the delivery of care through the nursing process.
  • Administer outpatient injections/infusions, including chemotherapy and other anti-cancer drugs, cardiac, and COVID related infusions.
  • Direct and guide patient and family education.
  • Care for all types of infusion patients, including oncology/hematology, cardiac, COVID, and all other outpatient infusions.
  • Maintain professional nursing standards.
  • Practice nursing within the MercyOne North Iowa professional nursing practice plan.
  • Demonstrate customer service and integrate Service Excellence into the work day.
  • Take responsibility for service recovery and work for outcomes that delight the customer.
  • Support and promote a safe environment for patients and staff by following established guidelines.
  • Provide accurate documentation of all outpatient infusion procedures and patient information.
  • Assess patients and identify physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Guide and direct patient care activities utilizing clinical/critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice.
  • Triage patient phone calls and assess for level of care needed.
  • Provide or facilitate learning opportunities to meet the educational needs of the patient and family.
  • Collaborate with members of the inter-disciplinary health care team.
  • Demonstrate support of departmental and organizational budgets by accurately capturing all charges.
  • Promote and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, medical staff, and other departments.
  • Display flexibility in job responsibilities and assist others needing help.
  • Adapt positively to the health care environment by supporting technology and process changes.
  • Maintain a calm positive manner under stressful conditions.
  • Identify, participate, and take action in activities that solve problems, promote better patient care, nursing development, and professional growth.
  • Support process improvement teams.
  • Participate in achieving the department budget by managing work hours, flexing and staffing to volumes, keeping overtime to a minimum, and utilizing supplies appropriately.
  • Participate in the application of process improvement principles by assisting in development and data collection.
  • Participate in the department’s Culture of Safety/Engagement Action Plan.
  • Attend and participate in department staff huddles and committee meetings.
  • Participate in peer evaluations and self-evaluation and goal setting.
  • May provide back up for other RNs to assist providers in patient care activities.
  • Develop/review departmental policies and procedures, nursing standards of care and practice.
  • Maintain required department confidentiality and abide by HIPPA regulations.
  • Provide competent patient care by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on age-specific knowledge, and adapting procedures and treatments.
  • Enhance ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional growth and development.
  • Participate in medical center and/or departmental education programs.
  • Communicate with and perform duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy.
  • Support and abide by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Proactively identify safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.
