About The Position

The Counselor is a part of a dynamic treatment team aimed at improving the lives of individuals, families, and communities through effective therapeutic and preventive services. Duties include performing substance abuse screenings, assessments, assess treatment needs and therapeutic intervention to adolescents and adults regarding substance abuse problems. As part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the Counselor develops and implements measurable individualized treatment goals and modalities. Performs crisis intervention to minimize relapse potential and support goals of treatment plan. Must have the ability to clearly communicate, orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, other agencies, and the community. All counselors and trainees must maintain compliance with documentation requirements pursuant to state, federal and agency regulations.

Requirements

  • Outpatient Counselor Trainee Requirements: Must have Bachelor's Degree
  • Must be enrolled in the Addiction Counselor Trainee Program within 30 days of hire.
  • This is the same as a certified addiction counselor or licensed addiction counselor.
  • Will see patients with substance abuse disorders and provide programming.
  • Take on-call.
  • Do consultations.
  • The individual must be able to work the hours specified.

  • Bachelor's in an accredited post-secondary school in a behavioral science field
  • Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) - South Dakota Board of Addiction and Prevention Professionals
  • Complete all academic and work experience requirements for Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC), apply for certification, and successfully pass IC&RC’s Alcohol & Drug Counselor (ADC) Written Examination within 5 years.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification - Crisis Prevention Institute Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) - Department of Health and Human Services active in state of practice
  • 3-5 years related experience and/or training
  • Clinical experience facilitating group therapy sessions and providing individual counseling services.
  • Experience working with clients having co-occurring addictive disorders in conjunction with mental health conditions.
  • Clinical experience with couples and/or family therapy
  • Training and knowledge in 12 core functions, continuum of care, interpersonal relationships, and dysfunctional families

Responsibilities

  • Performs screenings, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports, and record keeping, consultation.
  • Assists with inquiry calls, consultations.
  • Required to be on a 24-hour call rotation.
  • Assists with continuity of care for patients during staff absences.
  • Provides individual, group, and/or family counseling.
  • Assist with transportation of patients.
  • Responsible for delivery of quality treatment services to chemically dependent people in a manner consistent with the philosophy of the Avera.
  • Provides clinical information to insurance companies for continued stay and/or appeals.
  • Provides accurate and concise data entry.
  • Submits billing for all services conducted in a timely manner.
  • Remains current on client records for quality assurance.
  • Assists with performance improvement/quality assurance tasks.
  • Participates in weekly clinical staffing with multidisciplinary team.
  • Must complete training to assist with medication monitoring and education.
