About The Position

Reporting to and under the general direction of the Director of Student Conduct and Campus Recreation, the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator performs a wide variety of complex student services professional activities and is responsible for coordinating and assisting in overseeing the programs, services, facilities and staffing of the Outdoor Program in Campus Recreation. The Outdoor Program includes, but is not limited to, weekend and extended trips, the indoor climbing/bouldering walls, the Outdoor Resource Center, Bicycle Maintenance service, the Bike Share Program, Aquatics Program, and outdoor special events. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating, assisting, and overseeing the schedule of programs and services each semester, while providing work direction for student employees and volunteers. This position is part of the operational and leadership team that oversee a 57,000 sq. ft. facility at the heart of the Sonoma State University campus.

Requirements

  • This position requires the equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job‑related field and three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing an outdoor or an indoor rock-climbing wall or climbing structure is required; a working knowledge of technical skills associated with outdoor recreation, indoor rock climbing, and low ropes course is required.
  • Wilderness First Responder (WRF) Certification is required.
  • Intermediate proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), database programs, using the internet as a research tool and email is required.
  • The successful candidate must possess a clean driving record and possess and/or be willing to obtain a valid California State driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in a related field is preferred and may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through at least one year of preferred professional experience in outdoor recreation Experience with college recreation programs including: practice in or knowledge of student development, sustainability, environmental education, and experiential education is preferred.
  • Climbing Wall Instructor certification from AMGA, CWA or PCIA, or equivalent is preferred. Other outdoor technical skill/instructor certifications such as Leave No Trace, ACA, ACCT, AMGA Single Pitch Instructor can be accepted in place.
  • Experience in rental and retail equipment operations and bicycle repair and maintenance is preferred.
