About The Position

The part-time Outbound Freight Handler loads and unloads freight onto and off of equipment and assists with recouping damaged freight. The role involves preparing, sweeping, inspecting, and cleaning trailers before loading, and safely handling freight using appropriate equipment. The handler checks shipment measurements, weight, classification, condition, paperwork, labels, destination codes, and hazardous-material requirements, and secures freight to prevent it from shifting during transport.

Requirements

Ability to satisfactorily pass a background check.
Ability to satisfactorily pass an alcohol and drug test.

Nice To Haves

High School Diploma or GED.
Prior experience as a Forklift Operator, Dock or Warehouse Worker, or Material Handler.
Previously held Forklift Certification.

Responsibilities

Load and unload freight onto and off of equipment and assist with recouping damaged freight.
Prepare, sweep, inspect, and clean trailers before loading freight.
Use safe lifting techniques to load and unload freight.
Select and use appropriate freight-handling equipment, such as forklifts, hand trucks, drum trucks, pallet jacks, and rollers.
Weigh and measure shipments to support proper classification, freight rating, and safe handling.
Plan cube utilization and proper weight distribution when loading freight.
Count and inspect freight and document shortages or damage.
Review freight bills for special instructions.
Check manifests for existing exceptions and compare labels and destination codes against freight bills.
Check special instructions and weight distributions on headloads, and compare headloads against freight bills when loading.
Verify hazardous-material product descriptions, identify paperwork discrepancies, and confirm proper placarding.
Block and brace freight to prevent shifting during transport.
