About The Position

Salem Public Schools is seeking motivated high school students interested in pursuing careers in education, early childhood development, and youth leadership. As an OST Intern, you will gain hands-on classroom experience, build professional skills, and serve as a valued mentor to younger students in the Salem community. The program runs on 10-week cycles: Fall (October-December), Winter (January-March), and Spring (April-June). Interns must commit to a schedule of at least 2 days per week (4-12 hours/week) and participate in monthly professional development sessions. Additional requirements include completing new hire paperwork, attending an orientation, and engaging in weekly supervisor check-ins.

Requirements

  • Internal Salem Public Schools (SPS) High School Students ONLY
  • Must be at least 16 years of age by the start of the program
  • Commit to a set schedule of at least 2 days/ week (4–12 hrs/ week)
  • Fully participate in monthly professional development sessions
  • Completing all required SPS new hire paperwork prior to start
  • Attending an internship program orientation and/or pre-internship walkthrough
  • Engaging in weekly supervisor check-ins.
  • Reliable & Punctual: Strong work ethic and commitment to adhering to assigned schedules and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong Communicator: Ability to work collaboratively with supervisor, program coordinator, other program support staff, and students.
  • Student-Centered & Inclusive: Passionate about fostering a welcoming environment, building caring relationships, and supporting students of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Growth Mindset: Reflective practitioner open to receiving feedback and continuously developing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and facilitate a 30-minute activity with students at least once a week (e.g., arts & crafts, yoga/physical activities, music/dance, or social-emotional learning games)
  • Support with program snack which includes: retrieving daily snack, completing daily snack monitoring & tracking, and supervising students while eating
  • Engage with students during choice blocks and support students in navigating peer conflict or challenges.
  • Assist site coordinators with program routines which include: engage with students during choice blocks, and support students in navigating peer conflict or challenges
  • Support teachers and or partners in facilitating enrichment activities
  • Lead program transitions and daily program circles with small groups
  • Support as bus monitor on the program bus home (optional)
