About The Position

The Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of drilling equipment. This role ensures adherence to safety protocols, maintains equipment, and supports high-quality project execution. The position requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and close coordination with crew members, supervisors, and landowners.

Requirements

  • Installation and maintenance of underground cable systems
  • OSP (Outside Plant) fiber and fiber optic cable handling
  • Telecommunications construction and underground utility work
  • General construction and installation experience

  • Experience using basic hand tools and construction equipment
  • Ability to lift, carry, and pull heavy materials
  • Ability to read and interpret plat maps, bore profiles, and technical drawings

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate horizontal directional drilling machinery in accordance with company and industry standards.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings to ensure all personnel stay clear of rotating equipment and blind spots during operation.
  • Identify, flag, and properly cover open pits, potholes, and bore holes during and after drilling activities.
  • Ensure all excavations and drill holes are secured, covered, or backfilled at the end of each shift.
  • Load and unload drilling equipment safely, including proper use of chains and securing methods for transport.
  • Operate and manage drill locating systems, including transmitters and handheld receivers.
  • Complete and submit accurate daily reports and required job documentation.
  • Maintain company vehicles and equipment, reporting any issues promptly.
  • Follow job instructions and direction from supervisors and leadership.
  • Uphold safety and quality control standards on all job sites.
  • Ensure all required documentation is submitted to appropriate personnel or systems in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with landowners and stakeholders to support project execution and maintain positive relationships.
  • Perform routine checks to ensure all drilling equipment remains in proper working condition.
  • Inspect completed work daily to ensure compliance with company standards and project specifications.
  • Assess situations quickly and make sound decisions to maintain productivity and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and external partners.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
