This role involves fabricating orthoses or prostheses as delegated by the lab supervisor, consistent with the department's scope of practice. The technician will create positive plaster molds, strip negative casts, thermoform plastic, cutout, grind and smooth plastic for orthoses or prostheses. They will also contour, drill, and polish metal work for devices and add closures as requested. Sewing materials and assisting practitioners on a PRN basis are also part of the duties. The role includes fitting patients with shoes or fabricating shoe lifts, tracking and ordering materials for inventory, and managing equipment. The technician will care for and come in contact with infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age patients. They will interface with all clinical and lab staff regarding the application of varied techniques to produce the most technically advanced and functional O&P devices. Additionally, the technician will contribute to the training of residents and students as assigned and perform all duties of the production assistant as needed.
