About The Position

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant is responsible for assisting with the global management of clinical and surgical patients. Including pre-, intra-and post-operative care. Orthopedic PAs perform patient histories, help with treatment plans, serve as first assistant in surgery and handle office-related duties.

Requirements

  • Certificate of completion from college or vocational school Completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.
  • 2-3 years relevant experience
  • California Physician Assistant (PA) - Upon hire
  • Must be current and in good standing.
  • Nevada Physician Assistant (PA) - Upon hire
  • Nevada license only required if applying to work in Nevada.
  • Must be current and in good standing.
  • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) - Upon hire
  • BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification). - Within 3 months of hire into job
  • Collaborative Agreement (CA) or evidence of Supervising Physician Agreement (NV State Medical Board), as applicable, with a designated supervising physician member of the Hospital’s medical staff - Upon hire
  • Hiring manager will initiate.
  • Current and unrestricted Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) approved for all drug schedules (II-V) - Upon hire
  • California and/or Nevada State Board of Pharmacy, as applicable.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers - Upon hire
  • Ability to participate in a federally funded program (Medicare and Medicaid) upon hire.
  • Physician Assistants must complete an educational course in controlled substances that meets the standards of practice by TFHD and the State of California within 6 months of hire into job.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations.
  • Interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Interprets and correlates subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establish a working diagnosis.
  • Formulates a treatment plan for orthopedic conditions within their scope of practice.
  • Implements therapeutic intervention for specific conditions when appropriate.
  • Exercises judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral or evaluation by the supervising orthopedic surgeon or other health care professionals.
  • Orders, collects and performs appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies, such as routine laboratory tests, EMG, electrocardiogram and radiologic examinations including arthrogram, ultrasound, CT, MRI and bone scan studies.
  • Performs compartment pressure measurements, digital blocks and regional anesthesia.
  • Performs minor outpatient surgical procedures such as tendon repair, wound closure and management, incision and drainage, needle biopsy percutaneous pinning of fractures k-wire and hardware removal.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as aspirations and injections of joints, bursas and cysts.
  • Performs closed reductions of fractures and dislocations.
  • Applies braces, casts, splints and other orthopedic applications.
  • Assists in the surgical suite including first assist, deep and superficial wound closure, application of internal devices and any other procedures delegated by the supervising orthopedic surgeon.
  • Conducts hospital rounds, writes orders, takes call and sees patients in the ED for the orthopedic surgeon
  • Evaluates and clarifies clinical conditions
  • Formulates and implements treatment and therapeutic plans for hospitalized
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
