About The Position

Summit Orthopedics is seeking full-time gap year students for an Orthopedic Clinical Assistant (OCA) program based in the Twin Cities. This program offers opportunities to learn from physicians, shadow other departments, and gain practical experience in an orthopedic outpatient setting. The role involves providing clinical support in a clinic or Orthopedic Urgent Care Walk-in setting, performing patient rooming, obtaining medical history, preparing patients for evaluation, fitting and dispensing durable medical equipment, casting, splinting, and other assigned procedures. Additionally, the OCA will communicate with patients and care team providers, manage patient records, facilitate follow-up care, and assist with paperwork. This is a benefit-eligible, full-time position supporting a Physician team or in a float setting, with a Monday-Friday schedule from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, subject to change. OCAs must be flexible to float to various Summit locations and potentially cover outreach sites.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor patient flow, room patients and obtain and record medical histories and prepare patient for evaluation and/or treatment.
  • Prepare required instruments and equipment for examinations. Clean and stock exam/procedure rooms, including instruments and equipment, between patient appointments.
  • Assist with casting, splinting, suture and staple removal, fitting and dispensing of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as appropriate, and as directed by provider.
  • Provide standardized patient education instructions verbal or written.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and appointments for further evaluation, testing, as needed, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Refill prescriptions on behalf of ordering physician.
  • Perform administrative duties, including manage patient charts to ensure accuracy and completion, sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab and x-ray and other related reports, and completing and sending necessary paperwork.
