Orientation and Mobility Specialist
About The Position
As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist with the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS) Harrisburg District Office, you will guide individuals toward greater independence. This position offers you the opportunity to teach skills that improve daily living and safe travel. In this role, you will provide Orientation and Mobility instruction to blind and visually impaired customers in addition to evaluating and teaching independent travel within the customers’ homes, workplaces, and communities. The role focuses on developing individualized plans and teaching techniques that enhance safe and confident travel.
Requirements
- Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Orientation and Mobility Intern program; or Possession of an active Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist certificate issued by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP); or A bachelor’s or master’s degree or certificate from an approved college or university program in orientation and mobility that includes a practicum.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- Conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments of customer abilities and gather information to create individualized instruction plans
- Provide personalized or group lessons using experience-based learning activities that build independent travel skills
- Monitor customer development and adjust instructional methods to support successful achievement
- Choose appropriate canes, travel aids, and other tools based on customer needs and motivation
- Offer training and consultations to staff and community partners who serve individuals who are blind or visually impaired
- Stay current with Orientation and Mobility practices by reviewing new materials and attending trainings
