About The Position

Everytown for Gun Safety is seeking two Organizing Managers to join the Advocacy Campaigns team. These managers will oversee several state-level volunteer chapters of Moms Demand Action, including Everytown Survivor Network volunteers and collaborating with Students Demand Action volunteers. The primary focus will be on growing the volunteer base, training chapter leaders, and ensuring chapters meet organizational goals while fostering inclusivity and diversity. Organizing Managers will work with chapter leadership to develop strategic growth plans and grassroots organizing, including electoral campaigns. They will assess needs, set priorities, identify resources, and support chapters in communications, partnerships, and advocacy efforts. This role involves conducting site visits, holding regular meetings, and running campaigns alongside other Everytown teams. New hires will receive comprehensive training on the gun violence prevention movement, Everytown's policy positions, managing for equity and inclusion, and volunteer management. Providing excellent customer service and timely communication to volunteers is essential. This position is based in our NY or DC offices with a hybrid schedule, though remote work may be considered. The role requires some travel, flexibility across time zones, and occasional evening and weekend availability.

Requirements

  • Understand how stereotypes, bias, and forms of racism in America (including structural racism, implicit bias, gender bias, religious bias, ageism, and bias based on gender identity or sexual orientation) impact our society, with an expectation that you will develop an ability to articulate the connection between these large societal issues and the disproportionate impact of gun violence on specific demographic groups in America
  • Understand how dynamics of power, voice, and privilege impact one-on-one and group interactions, and a commitment to using power, voice, and privilege to make our movement more equitable
  • Passion for the organization’s mission
  • Strong volunteer or staff management skills, in particular experience working with diverse or marginalized communities, constituents, and volunteer leaders
  • Passion for and demonstrated experience developing and mentoring volunteers or staff
  • Organizing or campaign experience (issue or electoral)
  • Experience writing and leading trainings
  • Ability to understand, evaluate, and articulate policy and strategic planning issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with deadlines, under pressure, and be flexible
  • Ability to travel within the US; this position may require up to 25% travel
  • Self-motivated and proactive problem solver
  • Comfort with social media, data management and technology including VAN, Google suite and Slack

Responsibilities

  • Implement innovative strategies to recruit new volunteers and to take action on our priority campaigns
  • Collaboratively create and oversee implementation of growth plans for chapters in the region, including developing the chapter in both breadth and depth of knowledge
  • Ensure volunteer chapters are building sustainable diverse grassroots field power for the organization to prevent gun violence
  • Utilize data about gun violence chapter growth and volunteer retention to direct the chapter’s focus and energy on organizational priorities
  • Mentor, train and manage volunteer leaders so that they can best support and grow volunteer engagement; regularly assess volunteer engagement and development needs of volunteer leadership.
  • Build diverse teams using management skills for equity and inclusion and equip volunteer leaders with the same skill set and knowledge
  • Value different perspectives and proactively engage people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences in order to build a strong movement, while teaching volunteers to do the same
  • Lead by example through demonstrations of integrity and professionalism
  • Share direct feedback with others and listen to and implement feedback given
  • Work closely with the Field Leadership Team, regional Organizing Directors and cross departmental teams to develop national and local strategies for various campaigns and programs
  • Collaboratively set long and short-term priorities with chapters; ensure work on the ground stays focused on agreed upon priorities, while maintaining flexibility needed to rapidly respond to new opportunities and challenges
  • Seed, encourage and support tactical innovations from volunteers and help replicate those successes elsewhere
  • Ensure campaign plans are in touch with realities on the ground; act as a bridge between volunteers and other stakeholders to make sure the organization’s plans are realistic and set up to succeed, advocating for volunteer needs to the larger organization.
  • Serve as a thought partner between volunteer leaders and the rest of the organization; continually build confidence and excitement about our work, priorities and organizational choices
  • Maintain timely and regular communication with Chapter Leadership, serve as first point of contact for questions or needs, and connect them to other staff contacts as appropriate
  • Serve as public spokesperson when appropriate/approved by the manager.
  • Develop knowledge on gun violence prevention policy, local and regional politics and relevant policy issues within the region
  • Monitor social media and other public platforms for appropriate content and ensure Chapter Leadership adhere to Social Media Code of Conduct
  • Manage regional budgets and approve budget requests from chapters
  • Serve as a liaison between the Organizing Team and other departments
  • Other duties as assigned
