About The Position

The Organ Placement Coordinator is a clinical caregiver that functions as a specialized member of the transplant team and provides 24-hour call coverage for the abdominal solid organ transplant programs for organ offer management/ donor call service, along with patient, physician, and hospital calls. This clinical caregiver will work in conjunction with OPOs (Organ Procurement Organizations), on call transplant surgeons and physicians, along with hospital staff to arrange for the successful transplantation of organs. This position requires population specific competencies. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires. Requirements

  • 3 years of clinical experience
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) Issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association within 30 days of hire

Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of deceased donor transplants, from notification of organ offer to offer acceptance through transplantation.
  • Assesses the suitability and prepares the potential transplant/organ recipient and live donor for solid organ transplantation.
  • Applies recipient and cadaver/live donor selection criteria at time of transplant and coordinates preoperative care for cadaver/live donor and recipient.
  • Communicate timely and accurately with transplant surgeons and physicians related to organ offers and with the OPO.
  • Notify, schedule, and update all transplants, HLA lab, OPO, and hospital team members through all phases of transplant, donor recovery, pre- transplant admission, OR and anesthesia scheduling and post-transplant.
  • Arranges all transportation for organ recovery and/or organ transport as required.
  • Contacts transplant recipients(s) for triage/ assessment of current status with appropriate documentation and report back to the transplant physicians for determination of candidacy.
  • Complete all required UNET documentation at time of organ offer, for acceptance and denial of organs and at time of pre- and post-transplant.
  • Complete all required notification and documentation required by transplant program and OPTN.
  • Receive patient phone calls and triage based on program criteria.
  • Receive outside physician/hospital calls related to transplant program patients and manage appropriate care per program criteria.
  • Assumes shifts as assigned by manager.
