About The Position

The Organ Donation Coordinator (ODC) supports the mission, goals, and strategic plan of LifeCenter Northwest (LifeCenter) by evaluating organ donor referrals, conducting medical evaluation on potential organ donors, and developing a plan with the healthcare team to maintain the option of donation. The ODC supports the Organ Recovery Coordinators (ORCs) with organ donor cases, with oversight facilitates donation after circulatory arrest donation (DCD) process, communicates and documents Medical Examiner or Coroner conversations and release for donation. The ODC works closely with the family support team (FS) and ORC to provide family assessment and care. The ODC also supports the operating room by performing organ perfusion and packaging and labeling of recovered organs. All these above actions are done pursuant to LifeCenter standard operating procedures (SOPs), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policy, and Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) standards.

Requirements

  • Skills typically gained in advance EMT, Paramedic, and Certified/Registered Respiratory Therapy or similar background/certifications and/or OPO experience.
  • BLS required.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and access to an insured automobile or the ability to arrive and depart from work and work-related functions at expected times.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members.
  • Demonstrates care, courtesy, and concern in all interactions.
  • Provides culturally sensitive care including consideration for diverse cultures, ethnicity, language, community, and beliefs.
  • The ability to multitask is crucial.
  • Must demonstrate operating knowledge of computers with a demonstrable, basic level skill (at minimum) with Outlook, Word, Excel, and other comparable software programs.
  • Must have a clear understanding and practice of universal precautions.
  • The employee is required to move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Response to ventilated referrals: All ventilated referral calls will receive a timely and appropriate response.
  • Organ donor suitability: The ODC independently completes a thorough chart review and onsite evaluation and communicates with the Resource Triage Coordinator (RTC) or Administrator on Call (AOC) to evaluate donor suitability.
  • Identification of Legal Next of Kin (LNOK)and determination of Family Readiness: The ODC Independently identifies the LNOK and completes the Family Readiness Assessment (FRA).
  • Family Support and Interactions: The ODC will be proficient in the foundation of family support and associated documentation.
  • Clinical and regulatory requirements and documentation: All medical and legal requirements will be met prior to organ recovery.
  • Medical Examiner (ME)/Coroner Contact: ME/Coroner has been contacted for release for donation and proper documentation in LifeCenter's electronic medical record is complete
  • Blood and Ancillary Test Collection: Blood samples and ancillary tests during the organ donor case (e.g., HLA, Serology, ABO, COVID-19) are properly packaged, labeled, and shipped. All necessary notifications are made and documented.
  • Organ Preservation and Packaging: Organs will be preserved for optimal transplantation outcomes.
  • Donation After Circulatory Death (DCD) Case Support: The ODC assists the ORC on DCD donor cases.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Cohesion exists between departments to positively impact the donation community.
  • Independent Study for Professional Development: The ODC acquires additional skillsets through self-study and identified course work.
