About The Position
The Bridgeport Port Jefferson Ferry, a trusted maritime transportation provider since 1883, is seeking highly qualified individuals to join their team as Ordinary Seaman. This position is for credentialed mariners living in the vicinity of Port Jefferson, NY, with scheduled shifts of 3 days on and 3 days off. The role involves living aboard the vessel for 3-day periods. The Ordinary Seaman is responsible for various shipboard duties, ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the ferry, and providing a positive experience for passengers.
Requirements
- Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Ordinary Seaman (OS) rating.
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Pass pre-employment drug test.
- Pass pre-employment physical.
Nice To Haves
- Prior deck experience aboard a commercial or non-commercial vessel is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lookout.
- Handle lines during vessel operations and secure the vessel to the dock.
- Direct vehicles on and off the vessel.
- Assist in the inspection of lifesaving, firefighting, and other safety equipment.
- Assist passengers boarding and disembarking.
- Participate in all training, drills, and exercises.
- Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard, and abandon ship duties.
- Perform painting, cleaning, and maintenance duties for the general upkeep of the vessel.
- Project a positive company image to customers, other mariners, terminal personnel, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Mate or Captain.
