About The Position

The Orderly/Patient Transport Associate is responsible for the transportation and transfer of all patients to and from inpatient rooms, clinical testing areas and procedural areas. The Patient Transport Associate provides the transportation of patients as assigned by means of the designated method (wheelchair or stretcher). Reports intended transport or return of patient to the nurse in charge of area. Observes patients for adverse changes in condition or appearance during transport. Verifies transport task with person at location of assignment and reports completion of assignment as appropriate. Responsible for assuring that equipment is properly assembled, cleaned, maintained and delivered. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and staff in a manner consistent with the values of Jefferson. Adheres to safety policies and procedures related to lifting, moving, and transporting patients. Transports non-monitored, stable patients as directed. Ensures IV drip rates and sites, oxygen flow, and any special equipment are checked by the RN prior to transport; monitors equipment during transport and reports any changes to the RN. Follows proper patient identification procedures prior to transport to and from service areas. Transports patients using designated equipment (stretcher or wheelchair) to clinical areas for treatment or diagnostic procedures and returns them to their room as appropriate. Observes patients for any changes in condition or appearance during transport and notifies the Registered Nurse immediately. Communicates with the assigned nurse regarding patient transport and return. Ensures stretchers are cleaned and sanitized after each use. Assists staff with turning, lifting, and transferring patients between beds, treatment tables, stretchers, and wheelchairs. Maintains cleanliness and proper functioning of wheelchairs, stretchers, and transport equipment. Reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment to appropriate personnel and removes it from service per safety protocols. Assists with post-mortem transport as needed. Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work environment as directed by leadership. Follows all isolation and infection control policies and procedures. Demonstrates understanding of the transport role during internal and external disasters; participates in drills as required. Supports patient satisfaction initiatives through professional and compassionate service. Completes all required annual mandatory in-services.
