About The Position

The Shadows-on-the-Teche, a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is seeking an Oral Traditions Digitization Intern. This internship focuses on processing and archiving oral history interviews collected from former high school African American history classes. These interviews, recorded on cassette tapes, are vital for understanding local history and are at risk of being lost. The intern will be responsible for digitizing these audio recordings, transcribing them using Rev, editing the transcripts, and creating catalog records in Re:discovery Proficio. This is a temporary, experiential learning opportunity with no expectation of employment afterward. The National Trust offers a stipend of $4,000 for this internship, which runs from approximately June 1 to July 24, requiring about 28 hours per week with some schedule flexibility. This is an onsite internship located at Shadows-on-the-Teche in New Iberia, Louisiana.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work effectively in an office environment, maintaining productivity and communications to meet deadlines and goals is required.
  • Be able to work 28 hours per week.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Bachelor’s level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bi-lingual language skills are a plus.
  • Connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus.
  • Familiarity with Re:discovery Proficio a plus.
  • Current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred.
  • Studies or demonstrated interest in museums, collections, exhibits, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Digitize the oral history interviews
  • Run recording through Rev to obtain a transcription
