About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking 1 Member to contribute to an oral history transcribing project alongside NPS Staff. This position is located at Andersonville National Historic Site (Andersonville, GA), which primarily focuses on telling the story of prisoners of war (POW) throughout America's conflicts. The park's museum collection includes artifacts, diaries, oral histories, and items made or collected by servicemembers. The primary role involves transcribing a backlog of oral history recordings, with cross-training in museum operations and assistance during park special events and programs. The intern will work with a team of historians, curators, and interpreters. This project addresses the critical need to transcribe existing oral histories, which will be used for research and storytelling. New oral histories will also be recorded and transcribed. The finished transcriptions will be highlighted on the park's social media. This placement aims to facilitate professional development, expose the member to land management agencies, and provide networking opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident.
  • Ability to be self-directed and work independently, as well as be a contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
  • Willing to undergo and pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, and end of term evaluations.
  • Must not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.

Nice To Haves

  • Hold or be pursuing a minimum of a BA/BS degree.
  • Relevant experience in public history, library sciences, archives, museum studies, or anthropology.
  • Knowledge of oral history professional practices.
  • Familiarity with US military history.
  • Coursework in public history, archival science, library science, museum studies, history, or anthropology.
  • Experience creating metadata descriptions.
  • Experience organizing audio materials.
  • Experience with AI and automated transcription tools.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to sit at a computer for hours to transcribe interviews.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Learn about US military history.
  • Work on site at Andersonville National Historic Site.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Deep interest in public history, archives, research, US military history, and public service.

Responsibilities

  • Transcribe the backlog of oral history recordings.
  • Assist with recording and transcribing new oral histories.
  • Assist during park special events and programs, such as Wreaths Across America, Memorial Day, and living history programs.
  • Cross-train in museum operations.
  • Represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional manner.
  • Complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, and end of term evaluations.

Benefits

  • Living allowance of $680/week for full-time or $340/week for part-time.
  • Potential eligibility for a federal hiring authority (Public Land Corps Hiring Authority) upon completion of term and 640 hours of service.
  • Provided training and orientation, including position-specific training, ACE policies and procedures, prohibited activities guidance, and support networks.
  • Specific training may include federal privacy act (FISSA), history of Andersonville, and basics of interpretation.
  • Up to $5,000 for eligible travel/commuting expenses (must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase).
