About The Position

Schedules all surgeries requested by physicians and physician offices. This role involves accurate data entry of patient information, surgical procedures, and special needs such as equipment and implants. The specialist will daily review and update the surgery schedule, enter physician block schedules, and build the surgery schedule in EPIC, ensuring efficient block utilization. They will also work closely with supply chain to notify them of special needs for cases and schedule cases with knowledge of limited supply lists to prevent conflicts. The role requires active participation in monthly surgery scheduling meetings and accuracy in assigning ICD 10 codes to diagnoses. There may be a need to travel to physician offices to assist with meeting scheduling expectations/needs and run reports as needed. The specialist will perform other related duties as assigned, be cross-trained in the Surgical Department Health Unit Coordinator role for coverage as needed, and serve as a role model for ICARE Values and Behavior Standards, respecting patient privacy and confidentiality, and demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA procedures and protocols.

Requirements

  • 6 months experience with surgery scheduling
  • Completion of medical terminology test with a passing score of 80%.
  • Strong understanding of ICD 9 and ICD 10 codes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Knowledge of EPIC
  • Must be self-confident and self-directed

  • Associate degree in health care related field

Responsibilities

  • Schedules surgical procedures through physician offices and inter-hospital departments such as: radiology, oncology, central scheduling.
  • Accurate data entry of patient information, surgical procedure, special needs: such as equipment and implants
  • Daily review of schedule for accuracy and updates and adjusts accordingly
  • Entering physician block schedules and building the surgery schedule in EPIC
  • Efficient scheduling for block utilization
  • Work closely with supply chain to notify them of special needs for case
  • Schedule cases with knowledge of limited supply list to prevent conflicts
  • Active participant in monthly surgery scheduling meetings
  • Accuracy in assigning ICD 10 codes to diagnosis
  • May need to travel to physician offices to assist with meeting scheduling expectation/needs
  • Runs reports as needed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Will be cross trained in the Surgical Department Health Unit Coordinator role and provide coverage, as needed.
