The OR RN Intern begins integrating technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. The position assists the health care team with illness and injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort. The intern provides direction and education and begins to assume unit-level leadership responsibilities. The role delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The intern safely administers prescribed medications and identifies incompatibilities or interactions. The internship begins with Monday–Friday, eight-hour day shifts for the first few months. After the internship introduction, the intern transitions to a downtown operating room (Main, CHoR, or Ambulatory) for the clinical portion. Schedules are intended to remain on day shift, but shift rotations may be needed for precepting. The schedule may be four 10-hour or five 8-hour weekday shifts. A week of off-shifts is included to provide exposure to trauma cases. The position may involve work across all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; schedules and rotations are set with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit requirements. The intern functions under the direction of an RN in providing patient care, emotional support, nursing in-services, patient conferences, physician rounding, and problem solving, in accordance with hospital, nursing, and unit policies and procedures. Supervisor approval or guidance is required for schedule changes, legal issues, care that deviates from standards, and identifying educational resources for developmental needs.
