About The Position

The Operating Room (OR) Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe, high-quality care during operative and invasive procedures. Working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical teams, the OR Nurse ensures a sterile environment, monitors patient status, and serves as a patient advocate throughout the surgical experience. The OR nurse requires strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. The OR Nurse is responsible for his/her designated patients during the assigned shifts and performs the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, direct care to assigned patients.

Requirements

  • Associates or bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • 2-3 years of experience in the operating room required.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Texas required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
  • Superior attention to detail and precision.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Proficient in documentation and use of electronic health records.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including on call as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Preoperative: Review patient history, surgical plan, and consent. Prepare the OR with necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies. Assess patient condition before surgery and verify surgical site. Performs the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Interoperative: Function as patient advocate throughout the procedure. Circulating during procedures, ensuring sterile technique and proper workflow. Monitor patient status, document care, and respond to emergency situations. Assist in counting instruments, sponges, and needles according to policy. Communicate with surgical teams to anticipate and meet their needs.
  • Postoperative: Assist in safe transfer of patients to recovery area. Restock OR and report equipment issues for repair or maintenance.
  • Acts as a resource person to other staff members.
  • Completes unit-based in-services and is responsible for encouraging professional growth in others and participate with training of new staff.
  • Lead/participate in surgical timeouts and safety protocols.
  • Acts as a patient advocate.
  • Utilizes electronic medical records (EMR) systems to document care and communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Follow infection control and universal precautions.
  • Maintains professionalism and teamwork within a fast-paced environment.
  • Contributes to positive interpersonal and inter-departmental communication demonstrated by positive interactions with patients, families, peers, and physicians.
  • Participate in required continuing education and department meetings.
  • Completes unit-based skills/in-services and is responsible for personal completion by set or specific dates.
  • When needed, participate in training of new staff.
  • Delegates tasks appropriate to the skill level of personnel.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, safety huddles, and incident reporting to support a culture of safety and enters RL6 incidents.
  • Demonstrates professionalism at all times and adheres to the standards of practice by following professional guidelines for practice such as Texas Board of Nursing, American Nurses Association professional standards, CIHQ, and all Federal and State standards of care.
  • Maintains a working knowledge and thorough understanding of all equipment and utilities and provides knowledgeable guidance and evaluation of the environment of care management including life safety (fire prevention), security, hazardous materials and waste management, emergency preparedness, infection control, and the safe use of medical equipment and utilities.
