About The Position

The OR Assistant is responsible for transporting patients to and from surgery and PACU, assisting Operating Room personnel in positioning patients and setting up cases, opening sterile items to the surgical field, cleaning and maintaining surgical areas and equipment, collecting and disposing of waste materials, maintaining supply levels, removing and replacing linen, cleaning and maintaining autoclaves, operating and maintaining equipment, understanding precautions and disposal methods for chemicals, demonstrating competence in organizational standards, and assisting with training new employees. The role also involves cross-training to other operational areas and completing required orthopedic education for hip and knee program certification.

  • Completes required hours of orthopedic education topics annually as directed by the Ortho Steering team for the Hip and Knee program certification.
  • Meets clinical competencies of hip and knee certification program in order to directly care for a Hip and Knee patient.

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients to and from surgery and PACU when requested, in a safe manner.
  • Assists Operating Room personnel in positioning patients.
  • Assists Operating Room personnel in setting up cases; Open sterile items to surgical field.
  • Cleans and maintains items and areas of surgery between cases, end of day, weekly schedules and monthly maintenance, decontamination of operating room and all removable equipment between cases.
  • Collects, segregates and disposes of all waste materials in all areas.
  • Maintains levels of scrub supplies and solutions, caps and shoe covers, cleaning supplies and solutions.
  • Removes and replaces all linen on patient beds and gurneys as necessary.
  • Cleans and maintains autoclaves every other week.
  • Operates and maintains all equipment used in meeting job responsibilities.
  • Develops a working familiarity of all precautions, use and disposal methods of all chemical used in the normal course of meeting job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates competence in relation to the defined mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the organization by ongoing completion of any or all of the following: proficiency testing, skill demonstration, practice of core standards for service excellence, and documentation review.
  • Assists with training of new employees.
  • Ability to cross-train to other operational areas.
