About The Position

CLFC Healthcare and Communications is seeking an Optometrist (OD) to provide on-site eye and vision care at North Carolina state-operated healthcare facilities. These facilities serve adults and children with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, substance use disorders, and neuro-medical complexity. The role involves clinical encounters within a secure inpatient setting, requiring adaptability to residents' needs and direct collaboration with facility medical staff. The engagement is on a per-assignment, flexible basis, with predictable clinic days set in advance.

Requirements

• Doctor of Optometry (OD) from an accredited school or college of optometry.
• Active, unrestricted North Carolina optometry license issued by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry, or eligibility to obtain North Carolina licensure prior to the start of the assignment.
• Clinical optometry experience.
• Not debarred or excluded from participation in Medicare or Medicaid.
• Ability to clear background screening and meet facility health screening and vaccination requirements, including seasonal influenza vaccination.
• Comfort working with vulnerable adult and pediatric populations in a secure state facility setting.

• Availability for multi-site coverage across the North Carolina facilities.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive eye and vision examinations for adult and pediatric resident populations.
• Diagnose and manage ocular conditions, and prescribe or fit corrective lenses and treatment as clinically indicated.
• Adapt examination technique and pacing for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities or behavioral health needs.
• Coordinate in real time with the escorting facility staff member and with nursing and medical staff on resident eye-care plans.
• Provide written clinical findings and recommendations to facility medical staff on the day of the clinic.
• Refer to ophthalmology or specialty care when clinically indicated, and record the clinical reason for referral.
