About The Position

CLFC Healthcare and Communications is seeking an Optometrist (OD) to provide on-site eye and vision care at North Carolina state-operated healthcare facilities. These facilities serve adults and children with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, substance use disorders, and neuro-medical complexity. This role involves clinical encounters within a secure inpatient setting, requiring the optometrist to adapt examination techniques and pacing for residents with specific needs. The optometrist will work alongside facility nursing and medical staff, document findings daily, and escalate urgent issues. The engagement is on a per-assignment, flexible basis, with predictable weekday daytime clinic schedules.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) from an accredited school or college of optometry.
  • Active, unrestricted North Carolina optometry license issued by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry, or eligibility to obtain North Carolina licensure prior to the start of the assignment.
  • Clinical optometry experience.
  • Not debarred or excluded from participation in Medicare or Medicaid.
  • Ability to clear background screening and meet facility health screening and vaccination requirements, including seasonal influenza vaccination.
  • Comfort working with vulnerable adult and pediatric populations in a secure state facility setting.

  • Experience serving intellectual and developmental disability populations.
  • Experience in institutional, inpatient, long-term-care, or state facility settings.
  • Availability for multi-site coverage across the North Carolina facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye and vision examinations for adult and pediatric resident populations.
  • Diagnose and manage ocular conditions, and prescribe or fit corrective lenses and treatment as clinically indicated.
  • Adapt examination technique and pacing for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities or behavioral health needs.
  • Coordinate in real time with the escorting facility staff member and with nursing and medical staff on resident eye-care plans.
  • Provide written clinical findings and recommendations to facility medical staff on the day of the clinic.
  • Refer to ophthalmology or specialty care when clinically indicated, and record the clinical reason for referral.
