About The Position

Optometrist – FCI-Jesup Work Location Federal Medical Center-Jesup 2600 US Hwy 301 S Jesup, GA 31599 Citizenship Requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Clearance Requirements: National Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints, and Drug Screen. Period of Performance: Estimated: 01 May 2026 – 31 December 2030 Type of Employment: Part-time – Three (3) days per month, not to exceed 32 hours per Month Estimated Pay: $75.00 to $80.00 per hour Employment Type: Independent Contractor (1099). Working Hours The Optometrist will work three (3) eight (8) hour days a month and not work more than 32 hours per month. The working days and hours will be coordinated with the Health Services Department. The estimated daily workload is 20 to 25 scheduled exams. Qualifications Be a graduate of an accredited school of optometry. Possess an expanded optometry license that permits the prescription of legend ophthalmologic medications. Possess a valid and current license to practice optometry in the State of Georgia. Must possess a minimum of one(1) year of experience in optometry. Copies of all certifications and resumes must be forwarded with your application. Summary of Duties: The Optometrist will perform eye examinations and refractions, provide prescriptions for eyeglasses and, in some instances, contact lenses, and fit and adjust eyeglasses. In an emergency, the contractor may be required to provide eyeglasses and/or the repair of eyeglasses. Attire The Optometrist is required to wear appropriate professional attire for the work environment. This includes business attire or scrubs (black and blue scrub uniforms are approved). The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing. Jeans (of any color), low-cut blouses, T-shirts, sandals (of any type), tank tops, and sweatpants/shirts are not considered appropriate professional attire. Federal Medical Center-Jesup will not be responsible for providing a uniform allowance. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct detailed assessments of the eyes, including testing peripheral vision, eye muscle function, and the retina, cornea, and optic nerve condition. This involves using advanced diagnostic tools, such as slit lamps and visual field analyzers. Write eye prescriptions based on the eye exam. Use of High-Tech Diagnostic Tools: Advanced imaging systems like optical coherent tomography (OCT) are employed to monitor and diagnose retinal and optic nerve issues precisely. Diagnostic & Imaging Instrumentation: Use Slit Lamp Biomicroscope for anterior and posterior segment evaluation. Use the Manual Keratometer for corneal curvature measurement. Use a direct ophthalmoscope for the interior retinal examination. Use Handheld Tonometer (e.g., Tono-Pen) for measuring intraocular pressure Developed personalized treatment plans for patients diagnosed with dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, or refractive errors. Identifying cases that require surgical intervention (e.g., cataract surgery) and referring patients to ophthalmologists. Fit specialty lenses for patients with unique needs, such as rigid gas permeable lenses for keratoconus or multifocal lenses for presbyopia. Offering guidance on how to properly use, store, and care for contact lenses, ensuring patients avoid risks like eye infections. Diabetes and Eye Health Screenings: Collaborating with other departments to manage diabetes-related vision risks and conduct screenings for early detection of complications. Providing therapy for patients with binocular vision disorders or focusing problems, which can improve learning and daily activities. Documenting electronic health system patient histories, treatment plans, and follow-up results. Providing virtual consultations to patients facing transportation challenges or living in remote areas.
