About The Position

The primary role of the Optometric Technician at Redhawk Vision Center is to assist the Optometrist with eye examinations and patient eye care. This includes conducting pre-testing or special testing, intaking patient history information, and guiding patients throughout their eye care and clinical experience. The technician is responsible for preparing patients by gathering information about their vision and medical history, explaining the exam process, and accurately documenting all necessary details in their record. They must be proficient with technology and various clinical instruments to take measurements and administer tests that determine the patient's visual capabilities in preparation for the vision examination. Key duties also involve performing contact lens insertion, educating and training patients on proper insertion and removal techniques, ordering various types of contact lenses, and managing the contact lens trials inventory. The technician will administer topical ophthalmic and dilation medications, scribe for the doctor, and provide translation as needed. Prioritizing patient care and ensuring smooth patient flow are crucial, requiring effective communication with doctors, staff, and patients. Under the Optometrist's direction, the technician may also perform therapy exercises or procedures. Additionally, the role requires assisting in other office areas as necessary, such as answering phones, verifying insurance, checking patients in and out, scanning charts, and maintaining a clean office environment. The position may also involve working on special projects, cross-training in different departments, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • One to two years of experience in related field
  • Working knowledge of MS Office package
  • Effective verbal communication skills to prioritize multiple tasks and to be available for incoming calls and inquiries
  • Effective written communication skills to clearly document patient visits
  • Excellent interpersonal and rapport-building skills
  • Ability to ask appropriate and relevant questions to identify patient needs
  • Ability to listen, process transactions, and interact with patients simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients before the examination by gathering information about the patient’s vision and medical history, explaining the exam process, and documenting all needed information in the patient’s record
  • Able to work well with technology and various clinical instruments, taking measurements, and administering tests to determine the visual capabilities of the patient in preparation for the vision examination
  • Perform contact lens insertion; educate and train patients on contact lens insertion and removal
  • Order contact lenses of various types of materials and designs, and manage contact lens trials inventory
  • Administer topical ophthalmic and dilation medications
  • Scribe for the doctor and translate as needed
  • Prioritize patient care and patient flow while communicating effectively with doctors, staff, and patients
  • Perform, under the direction of the Optometrist, some therapy exercises or procedures with the patient
  • Assist in other areas of the office as necessary, such as answering phones, verifying insurance, checking in patients, scanning charts, maintaining a clean office, and checking patients in and out
  • Work on special projects, cross-train in different departments, and perform other related duties as assigned or requested
