About The Position

The Optometric Tech internship is based at Altman Eye Center in Pikeville, Kentucky. Altman Eye Center is an optometry practice founded by Dr. J. Turner Altman, providing routine comprehensive eye exams, diabetic-related eye evaluations, and urgent care for eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. The practice uses advanced eye-care technology and offers a boutique optical experience.

The intern supports patient preparation and eye examinations, assists optometrists as needed, and helps patients select and fit frames. The position requires a minimum of 80 hours during the semester, concurrent enrollment in CVL 401: Integrated Internship Experience, and successful completion of that course. The student enrolls in the two-credit-hour option. The role averages 11–15 hours per week and is grant funded.

Requirements

• Be enrolled full-time and in good standing at the University of Pikeville (UPIKE).
• Have an interest in optometry as a career.
• Be willing to act and present oneself professionally in the workplace.
• Complete at least 80 work hours during the semester.
• Enroll concurrently in CVL 401: Integrated Internship Experience and successfully complete the course, using the two-credit-hour option.

Nice To Haves

• Coursework, experience, or academic interest in biomedical sciences.
• Biology, biomedical, or similar pre-optometry background with demonstrated relevant knowledge, education, skills, or experience.
• Attention to detail, strong active listening, written and verbal communication, customer focus, and willingness to learn.
• Computer skills with Word, Excel, Canva, and social media or new technology.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for eye examinations.
• Obtain patient histories before eye examinations.
• Provide testing needed to prepare patients for examinations.
• Assist optometrists during examinations as needed.
• Help patients choose frames, take measurements, and adjust glasses.
• Call patients to schedule, confirm, or reschedule appointments and for other reasons.
• Share other duties among employees, including organizing and light cleaning.
