Opto-Mechanical Engineer

CACI International•Florham Park, NJ
•$72,700 - $149,200

About The Position

CACI is seeking an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join its Photonics team. Under limited direction, the engineer designs packaging for complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements for research and development and production programs serving U.S. government customers. The role owns mechanical designs from concept through flight qualification, including requirements definition, trade studies, detailed design, and collaboration with optical engineers to translate optical prescriptions into robust mechanical designs. The engineer designs optical mounts and systems to withstand launch loads, vibration, shock, thermal cycling, and vacuum environments, and develops alignment strategies that maintain athermalization and stability across temperature changes. The position produces build-to drawings and data packages; works with and manages third-party vendors to resolve specification, performance, and reliability issues; and supports the production of commercial and custom-machined parts. The engineer also supports integration, alignment, testing, environmental testing, and troubleshooting. The role may lead designers, analysts, and other engineering professionals, and may directly supervise lab technicians. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience. Candidates must be U.S. citizens. The proposed salary range is $72,700–$149,200. The role requires up to 10% travel within the continental United States.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design and analysis software.
  • Experience working with optomechanical systems, precision structures, or high-stability mechanical assemblies.
  • Strong understanding of optical mounts, materials, tolerancing, and alignment techniques.
  • Familiarity with using and preparing CAD models for FEA software for thermal and structural (shock and vibration) analysis.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) methodologies, and experience applying these principles to improve product quality and manufacturability.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • SolidWorks and Ansys experience are strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements.
  • Experience with gimbal systems or other precision motion control mechanisms, including design, integration, and optimization for optical systems or robotics.
  • Familiarity with material behavior in space environments, including CTE matching, thermal gradients, and outgassing considerations.
  • Experience conducting mechanical simulations using ANSYS Mechanical, including static, modal, thermal, nonlinear, or dynamic analyses.
  • Experience in optical and electronic subassembly layout, including board physical design, chassis or enclosure design, optical fiber routing, and electrical and optical connector selection.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities
