About The Position

This is an Optimization Engineering Co-Op opportunity for students focused on engineering or sustainability. The role involves contributing to meaningful projects centered on energy efficiency and building performance. The ideal candidate is interested in how buildings operate and how data, systems, and analysis can improve energy use, comfort, and sustainability. Responsibilities include energy assessments, commissioning, retro-commissioning, and performance optimization. The position offers hands-on experience in analyzing data, supporting fieldwork, documenting findings, and assisting project teams in evaluating and improving building systems. The role requires an organized, detail-oriented, and curious individual who asks questions, seeks feedback, and collaborates with professionals across disciplines. This Co-Op aims to provide practical experience, professional growth, and a foundation for a career in energy, optimization, or sustainable building design. Co-Ops at HEAPY are active contributors, gaining exposure to real-world energy and sustainability projects, developing technical and professional skills, and learning how engineering decisions impact building performance and environmental outcomes.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited (or equivalent) program.
• Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of a semester.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• High attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate in a team-oriented environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Nice To Haves

• Exposure to data analysis or visualization tools.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or energy modeling tools.
• Curious mindset with a willingness to learn and seek feedback.

Responsibilities

• Develops and applies foundational engineering knowledge within the built environment.
• Supports energy studies, audits, and building system evaluations (HVAC, lighting, envelope, etc.).
• Assists with system installation verification and functional performance testing.
• Gathers, organizes, and analyzes data related to building performance and energy usage.
• Contributes to the preparation of energy calculations, reports, and technical documentation.
• Utilizes software tools for data analysis, visualization, and building performance evaluation.
• Participates in field observations and validation of equipment and system performance.
• Collaborates with project teams to support deliverables and meet deadlines.
• Builds understanding of commissioning, retro-commissioning, and optimization processes.
• Ensures accuracy and quality in all assigned work.
• Engages in continuous learning and professional development.
