About The Position

This is an Optimization Engineering Co-Op opportunity for students focused on engineering or sustainability. The role involves contributing to meaningful projects centered on energy efficiency and building performance. The intern will gain experience in areas such as energy assessments, commissioning, retro-commissioning, and performance optimization. The position requires problem-solving skills, hands-on learning, data analysis, fieldwork, documentation, and collaboration with engineering teams. The Co-Op is designed to provide real-world experience, professional growth, and a foundation for a career in energy, optimization, or sustainable building design. HEAPY's Optimization Engineering Co-Ops are active contributors, gaining exposure to energy and sustainability projects, developing technical and professional skills, and learning how engineering decisions impact building performance and environmental outcomes.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited (or equivalent) program.
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of a semester.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Curious mindset with a willingness to learn and seek feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to data analysis or visualization tools.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or energy modeling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of assignments related to energy assessments, commissioning, retro-commissioning, and building performance optimization.
  • Supports project teams through data analysis, fieldwork, and documentation.
  • Gains exposure to real-world applications in energy and sustainability.
  • Develops and applies foundational engineering knowledge within the built environment.
  • Supports energy studies, audits, and building system evaluations (HVAC, lighting, envelope, etc.).
  • Assists with system installation verification and functional performance testing.
  • Gathers, organizes, and analyzes data related to building performance and energy usage.
  • Contributes to the preparation of energy calculations, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Utilizes software tools for data analysis, visualization, and building performance evaluation.
  • Participates in field observations and validation of equipment and system performance.
  • Collaborates with project teams to support deliverables and meet deadlines.
  • Builds understanding of commissioning, retro-commissioning, and optimization processes.
  • Ensures accuracy and quality in all assigned work.
  • Engages in continuous learning and professional development.
