About The Position

The Virginia Eye Institute (VEI) is hiring a full-time optician to join their busy practice. VEI is a large and dynamic practice of ophthalmologists and optometrists in the Richmond, VA area. The role involves providing excellent customer service, advising patients on visual solutions based on their needs and daily activities, and educating them on the latest technology. The optician will analyze and evaluate patient prescriptions, monitor eyewear fabrication quality, and resolve patient issues in conjunction with doctors and the clinical team. They will also interpret and explain insurance benefits for accurate pricing and filing, communicate order status to patients, and process both eyeglass and contact lens orders. Additionally, opticians may be responsible for financial close-out and bank deposits at the end of the day.

Requirements

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate patient’s prescription to provide best patient experience
  • Knowledge of lens designs, materials, products and latest technology available
  • Knowledge of appropriate frame selection based on prescription, facial shape and size, lens design and appropriate fit
  • Ability to process both eyeglass and contact lens orders
  • Adherence to privacy and confidential and proprietary company policies and procedures (i.e. HIPAA)
  • Maintain license requirements
  • Participate in training and educational activities

  • Resolution of patient difficulties and issues in conjunction with doctors and clinical team
  • Proper interpretation of insurance benefits and explanation of benefits to patient for accurate pricing and insurance filing
  • Proper notification and communication with patients regarding order status
  • Ability to process both eyeglass and contact lens orders
  • Financial close out and bank deposit at end of day when necessary
  • Keeping work station neat, clean and presentable as well as lab, equipment and public areas
  • Greeting all patients promptly and courteously
  • Determining and obtaining insurance benefits and authorization and interpreting for patient
  • Analyzing and interpreting prescriptions to insure proper frame and lens selection
  • Communicating knowledge of lens designs, materials, products and latest technology available to patient
  • Selecting appropriate frames based on prescription, facial shape and size, lens design and appropriate fit
  • Collecting payment from patient and processing billing to insurance if applicable
  • Processing orders in timely fashion in EHR, insurance filing, lab order and frame order
  • Performing final quality inspection and notification to patient when materials available, all with proper documentation in electronic system
  • Proper adjustment and fit of eyewear with patient instruction for lens design adaptation, initial evaluation of performance at dispense, as well as instructions for proper care
  • Adhering to privacy and confidential and proprietary company policies and procedures (i.e. HIPAA)
  • Maintaining license requirements
  • Participating in any/all training and educational activities necessary to fulfill at least the minimum requirements as specified within department goals
  • Completing additional responsibilities as assigned by changing business needs
