About The Position

BJ’s Wholesale Club is seeking an Optical Licensed Manager to oversee optical operations and lead a team. This role involves performing optician duties alongside managerial responsibilities, including managing, teaching, and coaching optical team members, interacting with members, confirming appointments, and maintaining the department. The Optical Manager also acts as a liaison between members and the lab to ensure timely order processing. The position requires a strong understanding of business data, leadership competencies, effective communication, and the ability to build high-performing teams. Team members will be taught, coached, and led through the club level training process, fostering a culture of development, ethical decision-making, and engagement. The role emphasizes guaranteeing service excellence, setting service standards, and ensuring a safe and positive environment for both team members and members. A deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting is essential for driving performance and profitability. The Optical Manager is responsible for sales opening and closing procedures, accurate fund collection, and educating members on product benefits to meet sales goals. This role requires adherence to HIPAA and other company policies regarding patient information. Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of this job.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to work as an optician within the State and keep license up to date and active.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including managing/supervising cross-functional teams, training team members, and driving and communicating results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills, organizational skills and an attention to detail required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Knowledge of optical products and business practices preferred.
  • High school diploma, college degree, and/or big box wholesale, retail, optical, and/or management experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Acquiring a deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for total club and department performance.
  • Driving performance and profitability by using reporting to identify trends and areas of opportunity.
  • Identifying and correcting process breakdowns before they negatively impact club performance.
  • Communicating the connection between operational performance and financial targets to the team.
  • Providing a high level of Member service, including answering calls and scheduling appointments.
  • Supporting Members in making eyeglass adjustments, taking measurements, reading prescriptions, and notifying them of product readiness.
  • Managing all sales opening and closing procedures.
  • Ensuring accurate funds are collected and payments are made at the point of service.
  • Educating patients on product benefits and recommending products to improve visual needs.
  • Spends downtime engaging with members in front of Optical.
  • Communicating and following up with Club Manager and Regional Optical Manager regarding department performance, maintenance, team member performance, and doctor relations.
  • Ensuring workstation/Optical department is always maintained and clean.
  • Supervising all team members in the Optical department, including training, separations, recommendations for promotions, and coaching.
  • Maintaining all club policies and procedures.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
